Spine & Back Pain — San Diego

Orthopedic evaluation and non-surgical management of back pain, herniated disc, and sciatica in San Diego.

Overview

A closer look

Back pain is one of the most common reasons patients seek orthopedic care. The good news: most back and neck problems improve with the right conservative plan. Dr. Sidney H. Levine evaluates San Diego back and spine patients with a focus on accurate diagnosis and a stepwise, non-surgical-first approach. When advanced imaging or a surgical opinion is warranted, we coordinate directly with spine surgeons and interventional pain specialists so you don't fall through the cracks. For work-related back injuries, we handle the reporting side as well.

What to expect

Your first visit

Your visit starts with a careful history — how it started, what makes it better or worse, radiating symptoms, and any red-flag findings. Examination includes strength, reflex, sensation, and nerve tension testing. On-site X-ray is often obtained. MRI is ordered when there are neurologic findings, red-flag symptoms, or persistent pain despite conservative care. You'll leave with a clear plan.

Recovery

What healing looks like

Most acute low back pain improves substantially within 4–6 weeks with the right plan. Herniated disc symptoms often resolve over weeks to months without surgery. Chronic back pain benefits from a structured, long-term approach that combines therapy, activity modification, and — for the minority who need it — targeted interventions or surgery.
